Smrdaky

Smrdaky is a balneological resort located in southwestern Slovakia, 60 km from Bratislava. It is famous for its healing sulfur thermal springs, which are used to treat various diseases.

The first mentions of the healing properties of Smrdaki’s sulfur springs date back to the 13th century. The first bathhouse was built here in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the resort began to develop at a rapid pace, new baths, hotels and boarding houses were built. In the 20th century, Smrdaky became one of the most popular resorts in Slovakia.

Interesting places to visit in the surrounding area:

Bathhouse: the main center of resort life with a park, swimming pools, restaurants and cafes.
Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin: an architectural monument in the Baroque style.
Forest Park: a picturesque place for walking and relaxing.
Sveti Jur Castle: a 13th-century Gothic castle located 10 km from Smrdak.
Museum of the city of Smrdaky: the museum’s exhibition tells about the history of the city and the resort.
Smrdaky is a place where you can not only improve your health, but also enjoy the beauty of nature, architecture and historical sights.

The Smrdaky health resort uses a comprehensive approach to treatment based on the use of natural factors:

The basis of spa treatment is the use of the healing properties of the local mineral waters and mud.

Mineral water comes from two sources - Josef-I and Josef-II. It comes to the surface with a temperature of 12 °C. 1 liter of such water contains 3400 mg of minerals (mainly sodium, magnesium and calcium), as well as up to 680 mg of hydrogen sulfide, which causes the characteristic pungent odor.

Therapeutic sulfur mud is formed in the process of seepage of hydrogen sulfide mineral water through loess soils. The extracted dirt is sent to "ripen” for at least a year in special pools filled with layered hydrogen sulfide water. During this year, the mud acquires a special consistency and thermal resistance. Thanks to this, it retains heat 4 times longer than water and is able to warm even the deepest parts of the body.

Hydrogen sulfide baths and mud applications:

Mineral baths:
The water heats up to 36-38 °C.
Duration of the procedure: 10-15 minutes.
After the bath, rest is necessary.
Both general baths and local ones (for hands, feet) are possible.
Beneficial features:
Anti-inflammatory and healing effect.
Positive effect on immunity.
Soothes irritated skin and increases its elasticity.
Prevents the loss of elastin and collagen in cartilage, tendons and connective tissues.

Mud applications:
The mud heats up to 43-45 °C.
Apply a thin layer to problem areas.
Duration of procedure: 20 minutes.
Beneficial features:
Reduces swelling around joints.
Relieves muscle tension.
Improves nutrition of intervertebral discs, cartilage and connective tissues by increasing blood circulation.
Strengthens the anti-inflammatory activity of the body.

During the summer months, open-air phototherapy is available at the Smrdaky resort. In bad weather and in winter, artificial UV radiation is used, which is effective for psoriasis.

Additional treatment methods are also used, such as:

Gymnastics (individual and group).
Classic massage.
Reflexology.
Connective tissue massage.
Manipulative and mobilization therapy.
Reflexive foot massage.
Kneipp therapy uses the contrasting effects of water (Charcot shower, Kneipp path)
Hardware physiotherapy:
Interference currents: improve blood circulation, relieve pain, relax.
Diadynamic currents: improve blood flow, reduce pain.
Devices "Nevrodin" and "Physiomag":
"Nevrodin” – pain relief with currents.
"Physiomag” – magnetic therapy (improving blood circulation, reducing pain, inflammation).
Ultrasound therapy – for tissue healing.
